Peña

January 2018

A Peña is an event with Spanish origins but is best described as spontaneous performances with the purpose of supporting others and sharing culture. In collaboration with One Voice 4 Change and Peak to Peak Charter School's chapter of the Tri-M Music Honors Society, students from both Belize and America participated in a virtual Peña. This event allowed for students from various schools, countries and backgrounds to showcase their musical abilities and talents as well as connect with others. The goal of the Peña was not to focus on the quality of performances but to showcase a sense of community between those in the United States and Belize. Alongside diverse performances from both Belizean and American students that ranged from poetry to music, the inclusion of "breakout rooms" throughout the event allowed the attendees to talk about the performances, ask questions, and simply get to know one another. In response to the positive feedback both One Voice 4 Change and the Peak to Peak Tri-M Music Honors Society received, they plan on creating another pelia, hoping to reach and connect even more people.

In January 2018, One Voice 4 Change, along with concert guitarist Alfredo Muro, worked with students and teachers at El Colegio Patria school in Las Varas, Mexico. Guitar teacher Hesiquio taught the El Colegio Patria guitar students three songs which are popular in Las Varas, Nayarit, Mexico. Alfredo Muro performed with these students, giving them a creative and collaborative experience they loved.

The Peak to Peak Chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and One Voice 4 Change are collaborating for a virtual event centered around the idea of a “Peña.” Every voice can be expressed through music to share social harmony and cultural values.

This global event is a social gathering of people who have cultural interests related to the arts, regardless of whether or not they are professionals or amateurs. The goal of a “peña” is to showcase a sense of community.
