BAND TOGETHER

It all began at the Think It Up LIVE event in Denver, Colorado. A student team from STEM School and Academy dreamed up an interactive music project called BAND TOGETHER, which would draw on the unique talents of their community to write, sing, play and record an album of songs. They hoped that making the album would strengthen their community and our education, and that their project might inspire other schools to Band Together as well.

 In these uncertain times, we all need to BAND TOGETHER again. We invite you to join a few ZOOM meetings intended to bring us all together through music, community, and learning. 

El Sistema

EL SISTEMA: Tricia Tunstalls book "Changing Lives," about Gustavo Dudamel http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4011959n and his background in the Venezuelan music phenomenon "El Sistema" started by Jose Antonio Abreu will be the guiding philosophy in a series of Virtual collaborations.

 

 

 

 

 

This method changes lives  as ".. students discover in themselves new dimensions or creativity and vitality...

Other important elements in this method include:

  • NO exclusion,

  • Social program rather than artistic 

  • Program of youth development through music,

  • Students work in groups, "

  • "Culture for the poor must never be poor culture"

  • Performance as an integral part of the learning process,

  • "Feeling of music as part of community life and as a fountain of joy" 

  • Avoids the elitist idea of art as something for the privileged few.

 

Rules of Engagement

 

  1. Have Fun!

  2. Participant Name in ZOOM: Please use your first name only so that we can get to know you. 

  3. Mute yourself when you're not the one speaking. (except open jam sessions)                                                                             Lower right in zoom window

  4. No hiding . . . Please keep your video in ZOOM on.

  5. Be Brave. If you're shy, chat your questions, suggestions, and comments. 

  6. 90 second challenge - Try to limit the time you are speaking. Every 90 seconds, engage the listener. (sing, play, chat, share screen, ask a question, etc.)

  7. When you speak, start off by saying your first name. "I'm Gregg from Texas, tell me how fast the song should go.”

  8. Any students joining MUST join with their parent or teacher.

A "Mulata" is a woman ("Mulato" being a male) of Caucasian European and African descent. The correct translation of the word "oye" is listen. The translation of the lyrics is thus: "Listen to my rhythm, good for fun, mulata!"
